by Curtiss Matson and Candice Campbell

The benefits of exercise are almost endless. A good exercise program can help achieve almost any health or sport related goal. Elvis died sitting on the toilet because he was too fat. There is a lesson to be learned there. These days exercise can help reduce the risk of you succumbing to the same fate as "the King." Not only does exercise increase muscle strength and endurance, but it also helps burn excess fat, lower cholesterol levels, slows resting heart rate, and decreases blood pressure. It has also been found to better balance and self-awareness; slow the onset of osteoporosis; help control diabetes; boost people’s self-confidence; and prevent low back pain. There are countless other reasons to exercise, whether it be social, physical, or medical, anyone can gain. Today, exercise is becoming more and more important as the population both ages and becomes more sedentary.

Benefits of  Strength Training

Increased muscular strength and muscular endurance will help to improve the quality of life and therefore should be incorporated into people’s weekly schedule. When increasing muscular strength everyday activities such as carrying groceries, lifting children and walking up the stairs will become easier. Muscle endurance is raking the yard full of leaves, walking tow miles without leg fatigue and repeatedly swing a tennis racket. Strength is muscle specific where as endurance refers to the number of times suitcase and muscle endurance would be carrying that suitcase across the airport. Increasing muscular strength and endurance will also help to improve posture and prevent injury. Having a strength-training program will help to increase the muscular strength and endurance, which will balance muscle groups, which will improve a person’s quality of life.
